Amazon Frogbit is an exceptional floating plant that provides ideal breeding conditions for shrimp colonies. Its dense, trailing root system creates perfect cover for shrimplets, offering them safe refuge from adult shrimp and fish whilst they’re at their most vulnerable. These cascading roots act as a natural nursery, dramatically improving survival rates during the critical early stages of development.

The plant’s roots also serve as an excellent grazing surface for shrimplets, hosting beneficial biofilm and microorganisms that form an essential part of their diet. Young shrimp will spend hours foraging amongst the roots, picking at the microscopic food sources that colonise them naturally. This supplementary feeding area is particularly valuable in the first few weeks of life when shrimplets require frequent access to appropriate foods.

Above the waterline, Amazon Frogbit produces attractive rounded leaves that help reduce light intensity in the aquarium, creating the subdued conditions many shrimp species prefer. The plant is easy to maintain, reproducing readily through runners to quickly establish excellent coverage. It also helps absorb excess nutrients, contributing to stable water parameters—crucial for successful shrimp breeding.

Understanding Our Plant Sizes

Mother Plants

Our mother plants are mature, well-established specimens that have reached their full size and vigour. These impressive plants produce new offspring weekly through their runner system, making them the foundation of a thriving floating plant colony. Mother plants feature extensive root systems and multiple crowns, providing immediate maximum coverage and breeding habitat for your shrimp from day one.

Standard Plants

Standard plants are average-sized specimens that represent excellent value for most aquarists. Whilst smaller than mother plants, they’re healthy, actively growing, and will readily develop into mother plants themselves with proper care. These plants already possess good root development and will quickly establish in your aquarium, beginning to produce their own runners within a few weeks of settling in.

Plantlets

Plantlets are the smallest option we offer—young plants that have recently been separated from their mother plants. Though compact in size, they’re perfectly healthy and will grow rapidly under suitable conditions. Plantlets are ideal if you’re patient and want to watch your floating plant coverage develop gradually, or if you’re working with a tighter budget. Given time and care, these too will mature into productive mother plants, completing the growth cycle in your own aquarium.
