A deep, glossy near-black to chocolate-brown variety, also known as Choco. Bred for depth of colour and a smooth, even body tone, making for a sophisticated addition to any shrimp colony.

About Black Rose shrimp

Black Rose, also called Choco shrimp, bring a deep, dark contrast to a planted tank and look stunning beside brighter colours in neighbouring tanks. They settle quickly and get on well with other peaceful shrimp.

Colour and grade

We select the darkest, glossiest shrimp. Younger shrimp can look more chocolate-brown, and the colour deepens towards black as they mature.

Breeding Black Rose

Keep Black Rose on their own to hold the dark colour. A pure colony produces young that range from chocolate to near-black, and selecting the darkest adults keeps the line strong.

Care and water

Neocaridina are hardy, but they need a fully cycled tank with 0 ppm ammonia and nitrite. Dechlorinated UK tap water is usually fine. They do best at 20–26°C, pH 7–7.5, GH 8–10, KH 4–6 and TDS 250–300 ppm. Keep copper out of the tank by checking plant fertilisers and medications, and feed sparingly: only what they finish in about two hours. Keep them in a shrimp-only tank or with very small, peaceful fish, as most community fish will eat shrimp. Our shrimp care checklist covers everything to do before they arrive.

Black Rose shrimp FAQ

Is Black Rose the same as Choco shrimp?
Yes, the names are used for the same colour. We sell the darker, glossier end of the range as Black Rose.

How many Black Rose shrimp should I start with?
We recommend at least 10. A group settles faster, shows more natural behaviour and gives you a good mix of males and females to start a colony.
