We choose air-driven sponge filters over powered filters for every shrimp tank we run, and it’s why we only stock filters like these. Powered filters use a motor and impeller to pull water through at speed — great for fish tanks with a high bioload, but far too aggressive for shrimp, which are small, delicate, and can easily be pulled in or injured by strong mechanical suction. Shrimp also produce a tiny bioload compared to fish, so they don’t need powerful filtration to clear waste — what they actually need is stable biological support. Our sponge filters provide exactly that: a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise, keeping ammonia and nitrite in check, while the sponge itself grows a natural biofilm layer for shrimp to graze on. Gentle, motor-free, and safe for every life stage — from adults right down to the tiniest fry.

A larger sponge for tanks up to 280L, offering plenty of surface area for algae and biofilm to develop alongside a thriving bacterial colony. Air-driven and motor-free, it’s an excellent choice as your colony and tank size grow.
XY-380 Aquarium Sponge Filter
Our largest single-sponge filter, ideal for tanks up to 380L. The generous sponge volume gives algae and biofilm plenty of room to establish, delivering excellent biological filtration without a motor or suction anywhere near your colony.
XY-2880 Aquarium Sponge Filter
Compact and efficient, the XY-2880 suits tanks up to 100L. Sponge and ceramic media combine to give bacteria, algae and biofilm space to grow, providing excellent all-round filtration with no mechanical parts to worry about.
XY-2881 Aquarium Sponge Filter
Ideal for tanks up to 200L, the XY-2881 offers a larger single-tower sponge with excellent surface area for algae, biofilm and beneficial bacteria to flourish. Entirely suction-free, so even the smallest fry stay safe.
